BBC axes Robin Hood

The BBC has axed Saturday night drama Robin Hood after ratings fell to just 1.7 million.

The show once attracted audiences of up to eight million viewers, however, ratings for the current series have been much lower and the final episode was shunted to BBC Two to make way for Wimbledon coverage.

The shocking last episode of series three saw Robin killed off, along with several of the other main characters, so it is perhaps no surprise that the series will not be returning.

Greg Brenman, head of drama at Tiger Aspect (who produced the show), said: "We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project."

The decision to axe Robin Hood comes just weeks after ITV axed its Saturday night family drama Primeval. Earlier this year it was revealed that ITV's Demons would also not be returning after just one series.

There had been a revival of Saturday night tea-time drama since the successful relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, however, the axing of these three dramas would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce.

I agree no more reality shows please, especially not from the BBC. I didn't know Robin Hood was to be axed- I thought perhaps his brother Archer would take up "the mantle", like Batman! But most of the best characters have now gone so it's best it's laid to rest.

Robin Hood was a fine series when it started...Jonas Armstrong was a delight and before this announcement he had already decided to leave to pursue other roles. It did go downhill slightly after Marion was killed and the BBC schedulers didn't help be moving it to an earlier slot. Without Jonas it wouldn't have been the same anyway.

It was probably time for Robin Hood to finish, where could they take it with no Robin Hood? But the lack of quality drama is a concern. Reality TV and Soaps insult the intelligence, and television companies should beware of turning off large sections of the population.

The story line for the whole series was rather silly but the characters were portrayed by good actors and played their parts well........sorry(ish) to see it go - but could have been screened better.

Thank Goodness for that, it was terrible load of rubbish. I bore no relationship to the real Robin Hood or even the idea of him. How on earth could Friar Tuck, a fat Franciscan, Monk have been Black, not to mention all the rest of the twaddle. It's no wonder that the kids of today have absolutely no idea or sense of history, that it's ratings fell is hardly surprising. Perhaps the BBC will be able to put something more worthwhile on with the money they're saving.

As soon as Jonas Armstrong quit, i knew they'd never make another series so it was no real surprise. But ditching drama for entertainment and reality shows? Oh whoop-dee-bleeding-doo. If it's anything like that drivel with Barrowman and Norton then i might just get a life and start going out on a saturday again.
