BBC axes Robin Hood

The BBC has axed Saturday night drama Robin Hood after ratings fell to just 1.7 million.

The show once attracted audiences of up to eight million viewers, however, ratings for the current series have been much lower and the final episode was shunted to BBC Two to make way for Wimbledon coverage.

The shocking last episode of series three saw Robin killed off, along with several of the other main characters, so it is perhaps no surprise that the series will not be returning.

Greg Brenman, head of drama at Tiger Aspect (who produced the show), said: "We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project."

The decision to axe Robin Hood comes just weeks after ITV axed its Saturday night family drama Primeval. Earlier this year it was revealed that ITV's Demons would also not be returning after just one series.

There had been a revival of Saturday night tea-time drama since the successful relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, however, the axing of these three dramas would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce.

Why haven't they got rid of those boring boring insulting shows with John Burrowman singing out of tune and Graham Norton being annoying. This was one of those shows that would allow you to escape from the drearyness of credit cruch and higher tv licence fees. Mind you - its not like they are going to bring it backnow - Songs of Praise - man that show blows - get rid of that! No more Saturday Eye Candy...Good times!

Shocking axing Robin Hood, bad move, was entertaining, it may have taken liberties with historical content but it was a romp. Axing Primeval again no a good move it was something that could have went down the same idea as Stargate exploring myths and legends. I agree too much reality TV how many more much off this drivel can we take, Big Brother now seems an outdated concept. Is a Saturday night ging to be filled with variety shows and video clip shows, seems like TV execs are stuck in the 1980s with Gene Hunt.

This is typical of the BBC, they get a great series, with new and up & coming actors, who I must say were brilliant and axe it, why put Wimbledon on the major bbc channel? Why change things for tennis? Although they killed off the main characters it is still sad to see a very good "family" SERIES AXED. Get rid of that silly Graham Norton show, sleazy, twee and not even funny, going downhill quickly.

I set up to record Robin Hood last week and missed it to find boring, boring tennis. Are the Beeb going to show it again, there may be about 1.6 million of us who did not see it. I agree about Eastenders, they are always screaming at each other (to show off their acting...skills?) or some one does someone else down. Pure drivel.

I have never watched Robin Hood but know that most who did, enjoyed it for what it was. I enjoyed the early series of Primeval but the latest one was pants with lazy writing and inconsistent character portrayal - I certainly would have not watched the next series. As for Demons, that certainly had promise so disappointed to hear it's over. For those of you dreading more reality TV, I am with you on that and being forty odd and having grown up with 1970's Saturday light entertainment, well hopefully it will be so so bad you will all take up reading again like I did. For those of you bemoaning American programmes, have any of you seen the re-worked Battlestar Galactica? Wow

Not surprised to hear the ratings for this show have collapsed and the show subsequently cancelled. Only the BBC would produce such a left-wing "politically correct" adaptation of Robin Hood. A working class Robin (who is supposed to be an Earl !), a black Friar Tuck (so "PC" it hurts.....), a female Sheriff of Notingham (what a surprise) etc, etc. If the BBC had continued with the series I would not have been surprised to see a three legged female black Jewish lesbian cast in a lead role. BBC - just stick to producing quality drama not indulge in your left wing political agenda please.
