BBC axes Robin Hood

The BBC has axed Saturday night drama Robin Hood after ratings fell to just 1.7 million.

The show once attracted audiences of up to eight million viewers, however, ratings for the current series have been much lower and the final episode was shunted to BBC Two to make way for Wimbledon coverage.

The shocking last episode of series three saw Robin killed off, along with several of the other main characters, so it is perhaps no surprise that the series will not be returning.

Greg Brenman, head of drama at Tiger Aspect (who produced the show), said: "We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project."

The decision to axe Robin Hood comes just weeks after ITV axed its Saturday night family drama Primeval. Earlier this year it was revealed that ITV's Demons would also not be returning after just one series.

There had been a revival of Saturday night tea-time drama since the successful relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, however, the axing of these three dramas would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce.

The BBC has turned into an overpriced consortium that churns out cheap 2nd rate rubbish and not worthy of the many millions of pounds it gets from the public . The license fee should be s@#$%ped because we dont get any value from the BBC.The BBC should be privatised and made to support it self or go bust .Either way the British public deserve better it is only the government that wants to keep this dinasaur.

Saturdays are dull enough as it is - full of boring "variety" type shows that are all much of a muchness. At least Robin Hood, Primeval and Demons attempted to break that mould a bit even if they weren't entirely successful. I think Robin Hood was easily the most successful of the three. I wish the TV networks would realise we don't all go out on a Saturday night!!!

I always enjoyed Robin Hood but i could never get my head round the fact that the Robin Hoods of yesterday had a couple of hundred followers in Sherwood forest not five, and Keith Allen made it into a farce And talking of axing why don't Yorkshire TV keep Heartbeat and The Royal going and s@#$% the comedy half hour they have Monday to Friday. They keep putting this trash out every night and it's just too daft to laugh at. Regards Alan Keighley PS. Sorry , i forgot to name the comedy half hour, it's called EMMERDALE

I am extremely annoyed that TV companies are cheapening up their offerings to viewers with reality shows which are really fodder for the brain dead while well produced drama which may have found more suitable time slots and encouraged more viewers has been ditched, particularly Robin Hood and Primeval.

No more Demons, Robin Hood or Primeval?? The BBC really doesn't like original programming........lets get some generic rubbish instead! Can't believe they're axing a show the American's liked enough to propose it for the big screen, that's really not clever.....

We love primeval and sad that its not doing another series. we have been watching robin too and will miss that too. suppose there is only so much that you can do though without repeating events. But glad that it won't be returing without the main characters. i don't like reality tv except for strictly and ice skating so they can keep them and yes agree that the soaps are on far too much.

Just about typical, get rid of the best programmes on TV and keep all the drivel and rubbish soap operas. If you don't watch soaps, sport or reality programmes what the hell is left. But they expect you to pay the licence fee without complaint. Absolutely typical of the BBC / ITV, outdated, behind the times and with a complete disregard for what the public actually like.

With Robin's, Guy's. Isavella's and the sheriff's deaths, it would have been difficult to make a fourth series. It was my favourite programme to which I looked forward all week. Not much credible can replace it.
