The BBC has axed Saturday night drama Robin Hood after ratings fell to just 1.7 million.
The show once attracted audiences of up to eight million viewers, however, ratings for the current series have been much lower and the final episode was shunted to BBC Two to make way for Wimbledon coverage.
The shocking last episode of series three saw Robin killed off, along with several of the other main characters, so it is perhaps no surprise that the series will not be returning.
Greg Brenman, head of drama at Tiger Aspect (who produced the show), said: "We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project."
The decision to axe Robin Hood comes just weeks after ITV axed its Saturday night family drama Primeval. Earlier this year it was revealed that ITV's Demons would also not be returning after just one series.
There had been a revival of Saturday night tea-time drama since the successful relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, however, the axing of these three dramas would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce.

I have to admit, I only watched one series of Robin Hood, be fore moving out of Home and not having a TV. I have caught a couple of episodes since and I am sorry to say that it just was not up to the level of previous Robin shows or movies. Robin Of Sherwood was far better. To kill off Maid marion made no sense at all. At least we can see Robin live again in the New Russell Crowe film that they are making. And Merlin should be back soon, which was way better made and acted, even if it did slant the legend a little bit. I agree with shawden though, I gave up on Eastenders years ago, too damn depressing!!
Posted by: maddragon2 on Fri Jul 03 01:10PM | Report abuseRobin Hood was a wonderful show. My six year old daughter adored it and it was her treat on Saturday night. When will we get value for money from the BBC? What on earth do we pay ourt licence fee for? I for one will be tuning BBC out on Saturday nights and watching something better.
Posted by: adamwalsh1 on Fri Jul 03 01:10PM | Report abuseoh no - we loved this family viewing! and Primeval too. there is so much rubbish on in the week - soon there will be nothing decent left to watch!

Posted by: tobiasodlum on Fri Jul 03 01:12PM | Report abuseIt is not surprising that the ratings fell. Firstly, The actor who played Robin Hood is rubbish. Secondly Keith Allen was not in it for a while.

Posted by: lefinlan on Fri Jul 03 01:13PM | Report abuseReally annoyed and upset. I have boys four boys from eight to eighteen, and it was one of many few programmes that we could all watch and enjoy together. Saturday night is now becoming 'blockbuster' rental night.
Posted by: jaskaley on Fri Jul 03 01:14PM | Report abusethank god no more money will be wasted on this utter rubbish. the storyline wasnt even close to the robin hood one and the acting was bloody rubbish. little john isnt very big, marian doesnt die before robin, robin doesnt have anohter lover, the whole lot of them dont die, its just stupid. they could atleast get some things right. why is everyone so clean aswell, especially the women who, if you look closely you can see, manicured nails and washed clean hair with highlights. whats with all the different accents aswell. kate has a completely different one to her own mother. should keep primeval as its a bit more exciting and you dont know whats going to happen next (who saw cutter getting killed off?) and demons was more believable also. all of the fight scenes in robin hood look so carp and fake and when they had those lions (serious bull) they didnt even do anything just roamed around a bit in front of the gang. and how fake were those silly grande things that supposedly would make a lion sit down and then let its prey run past. every episode there were numerous tins that quite simply wouldnt happen in the real world.robin was always a super shot with his bow until he was nearly drowning and it then took him three shots to get it throught he loop. just another inconsistency and piece of bull in the show that tries to add to the drama but fails epically.
Posted by: yurut53 on Fri Jul 03 01:14PM | Report abuseWell Jonas Armstrong left, so why flog a dead horse? Half the good characters were killed off as well! Roll on next series of Merlin.
