BBC axes Robin Hood

The BBC has axed Saturday night drama Robin Hood after ratings fell to just 1.7 million.

The show once attracted audiences of up to eight million viewers, however, ratings for the current series have been much lower and the final episode was shunted to BBC Two to make way for Wimbledon coverage.

The shocking last episode of series three saw Robin killed off, along with several of the other main characters, so it is perhaps no surprise that the series will not be returning.

Greg Brenman, head of drama at Tiger Aspect (who produced the show), said: "We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project."

The decision to axe Robin Hood comes just weeks after ITV axed its Saturday night family drama Primeval. Earlier this year it was revealed that ITV's Demons would also not be returning after just one series.

There had been a revival of Saturday night tea-time drama since the successful relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, however, the axing of these three dramas would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce.

The problem is that Bristish Tele just doesn't invest in decent tv crews. They are too busy lining the pockets of chat show hosts with huge egos. You compare ITVs Demons with the US' Supernatural which airs on ITV2. The difference in standard between the two is huge and lets face it to try and pass of a King rat mock up as a demon was just laughable. Robin Hood had a good concept and what I saw of the first series was great, but no doubt its development was ignored. Weekend tele just isn't worth staying in for anymore. The channels need to reevaluate their priorities and start trying to rival the professional delivery of the US drama shows.

Anyone who thought this was good TV is an idiot. The fact people think it was shows why we have so much rubbish on the telly. Badly written. Badly acted. Badly directed. Badly designed. Badly cast.

I stopped watching Robin Hood after the character changes from the last series. It never was the strongest of shows but with cuts I doubted it would be back for a third series. Primeval left with a cliffhanger but again lots of cast changes in this series. Doctor Who seems to be on a downturn as well with so few episodes this year, change of doctor next year and the shrinking of Torchwood to 1 week of episodes. I still don't know why they didn't expand Torchwood out to cover for Doctor Who not being shown this year. Could it be that the heads at the BBC don't want it any more and are killing off sci-fi again. They did it last with Red Dwarf and Doctor Who by switching schedules and stations for the shows just like they've done with Robin Hood.

"would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce." So, it's down to quantity, rather than quality, then?

Maybe they have all axed the decent programmes so they can charge idiots to text in with which one they want to see brought back. If nobody sent texts to reality drival they would be forced to make something decent or go the same way as setanta
