BBC axes Robin Hood

The BBC has axed Saturday night drama Robin Hood after ratings fell to just 1.7 million.

The show once attracted audiences of up to eight million viewers, however, ratings for the current series have been much lower and the final episode was shunted to BBC Two to make way for Wimbledon coverage.

The shocking last episode of series three saw Robin killed off, along with several of the other main characters, so it is perhaps no surprise that the series will not be returning.

Greg Brenman, head of drama at Tiger Aspect (who produced the show), said: "We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project."

The decision to axe Robin Hood comes just weeks after ITV axed its Saturday night family drama Primeval. Earlier this year it was revealed that ITV's Demons would also not be returning after just one series.

There had been a revival of Saturday night tea-time drama since the successful relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, however, the axing of these three dramas would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce.

How on earth can the producers of this series be 'proud to be custodians of the Robin Hood legend' when they utterly detroyed it with their modern-day politically correct corruption of the legend - A female sherriff of Nottingham???? Whatever the situation may be nowadays it just wouldn't have happened then. These people have done nothing to be proud of, and I know loads of people who had been looking forward to seeing the new series but stopped watching after just a couple of episodes because of the way the legend had been mucked about. I'm all for recreating historical and legendary drama in a modern-day setting, but if you're leaving in it in it's original time-frame and setting then don't introduce politacally correct concepts which would not have applied at that time. I'm surprised the audience for the last episode didn't fall even lower. Don't ever let this production company get their hands on any similar projects again!

I was a massive Robin Hood fan but I think the decision to axe it is right - it wouldn't have been any good without Robin, Guy, Alan and the sheriff of notthingham anyway.

I'm disgusted and my children will be too. How it is possible to axe such good drama and continue with the utter drivel of Eastenders and all the reality shows? Who are the idiots that make these decisions?Time to turn off BBC.

I'd have to agree with you, shawden, although the answer to your question is pretty obvious. Shows like Corrie and Eastenders pull in the masses that enjoy the boring repetitious storylines that soaps offer. Easy teatime viweing to prevent too much nasty thinking. Also shows set largely in houses and pubs are a hell of a lot cheaper to produce than those with expensive sets, location shoots and CGI. All that and our 5 main channels are never going to be too comfortable in paying out for genre shows. It's amazing that Doctor Who and Torchwood have survived really. Guess we will just have to continue letting the US show us how quality television really can be made.

Am gutted, thought it was a really good series, just hope they don't do it to Merlin too. Don't think they realise it also atracts a younger audience as my son is a huge fan. I'd rather him watch Robin Hood, Merlin and Doctor Who than the rubbish it'll be replaced by!

Probably replaced by more telly voting TV, Britains obviously got no talent or X Factor. Wjt do so many people what that stuff (can't swear) than dramas is beyond me.
