BBC axes Robin Hood

The BBC has axed Saturday night drama Robin Hood after ratings fell to just 1.7 million.

The show once attracted audiences of up to eight million viewers, however, ratings for the current series have been much lower and the final episode was shunted to BBC Two to make way for Wimbledon coverage.

The shocking last episode of series three saw Robin killed off, along with several of the other main characters, so it is perhaps no surprise that the series will not be returning.

Greg Brenman, head of drama at Tiger Aspect (who produced the show), said: "We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project."

The decision to axe Robin Hood comes just weeks after ITV axed its Saturday night family drama Primeval. Earlier this year it was revealed that ITV's Demons would also not be returning after just one series.

There had been a revival of Saturday night tea-time drama since the successful relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, however, the axing of these three dramas would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce.

I don't watch a lot of TV but this one I did and enjoyed. But as usual it is now gone the same way as Primevil and Demons. NOT a lot left for me to watch now, or do the bbc intend to axe DR. WHO, CASUALTY and HOLBY CITY as well. Still looking on the bright side (if there is one) I will no longer need a TV licence. By the way can't stand soaps or reality TV so well done BBC. maureen.cave@btinternet.com

They put the two best Saturday night family drama's on at near enough the same time and wonder why the rateings are lower then they go and axe then.....where is the logic in that. I think it's a real shame children have to watch reality shows all the time instead of something that lets their imagination grow.

As we are hopefully entering a post-celebrity cuture an increased dosage of tedious (un) reality rubbish would be counter productive.

Robin hood could be a little predictable and the @#$% in modern day make up,eybrows, and hair was always a bit daft - however it was always a good yarn - why don't they just try and make it and this sort of drama better instead of copping out and giving us more idiotic lazy reality rubbish or American telly - Have a little pride in your service folks!
