BBC axes Robin Hood

The BBC has axed Saturday night drama Robin Hood after ratings fell to just 1.7 million.

The show once attracted audiences of up to eight million viewers, however, ratings for the current series have been much lower and the final episode was shunted to BBC Two to make way for Wimbledon coverage.

The shocking last episode of series three saw Robin killed off, along with several of the other main characters, so it is perhaps no surprise that the series will not be returning.

Greg Brenman, head of drama at Tiger Aspect (who produced the show), said: "We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project."

The decision to axe Robin Hood comes just weeks after ITV axed its Saturday night family drama Primeval. Earlier this year it was revealed that ITV's Demons would also not be returning after just one series.

There had been a revival of Saturday night tea-time drama since the successful relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005, however, the axing of these three dramas would appear to signal a return to entertainment and reality shows, which are much cheaper to produce.

Why not axe Eastenders and Coronation Street instead of Robin Hood or Primeval, time for them to be rested as same drivel every week

I happen to think that Robin Hood was the best viewing on telly for the weekend and for what we are paying for our licence to be given constant repeats this was a breath of fresh air..............and now they are axing it. TYPICAL OF THE BBC.

Please no more reality tv shows, we are bombarded with them, if ITV cannot afford to make any proper TV, why are they still showing so many adverts, they must be raking the money in from them, as they are now at least 4mins long at each break, and even longer between programmes, come on ITV pull your finger out, Saturday night drama was your best ever, Demons, Robin Hood and Primeval were all excellent !!! please do not turn into channel 4.

Although entertaining (but SO predictable each week), it is a good time for this drama to be concluded. It would have run the danger of going on for too long and without Robin Hood, how could you actually carry on the name?

what a real shame - the two programmes i most enjoyed on Saturday evening, Robin Hood and Primeval - to be replaced by what rubbish, no doubt more of the game show types which I hate - i shall have to reconsider what i watch at teatime on Saturdays or better still just switch off at that time. I am indifferent to "Robin Hood", but unhappy with the loss of "Demons" and "Primeval". What will we get instead, more "reality" TV? Even more dumbing down?
