Mollie Sugden

The actress Mollie Sugden has died following a long illness, aged 86.

She is best known for her role as Mrs Slocombe in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served?, which ran for 69 episodes between 1972 and 1985.

Frank Thornton, who played Captain Peacock in the comedy said: "Mollie, of course, was an excellent comedian. She was a jolly good actress. You can't play comedy if you don't get on. It was a wonderful team."

Sugden was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire in 1922. After training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she spent her early career in repertory theatre.

She went on to appear in shows including Z Cars, Up Pompeii, The Goodies, That's My Boy and Coronation Street, in which she played Nellie Harvey.

One of her most memorable recent appearances was in an episode of Little Britain in 2003.

This is a sad loss to comedy and entertainment in general,a truly loved english icon who was immensly talented, but what is even sadder is the amount of postings on here compared to when Jade Goody died, says it all really for the state of the nation

God Bless you Mollie: and, of course, your alter-ego "Mrs. Slocum" with her wonderful "Pussy"! Good old Variety is also now very nearly well and truly dead !

Mollie was clearly a really great naturally gifted comdy actress. Brilliant in Are You Being Served of course. I also recently saw her on DVD in the 1970 series (not film) Six Wives of Henry VIII 1970 with Keith Michell as Henry. She was the maid to Anne of Cleves-brilliant. Am very sorry she has passed away.
