Golden Girls actress Estelle Getty has died at the age of 84.
The star played sarcastic pensioner Sophia Petrillo in the hit US sitcom which ran from 1985 to 1992. She later revived the role in spin-offs The Golden Palace and Empty Nest.
Getty's character Sophia was unable to censor what she said following a stroke and much of the humour came from her frank and sometimes shocking one-liners, much to the annoyance of her daughter Dorothy.
Getty had struggled to make a living as an actress for more than 40 years before getting her big break in The Golden Girls. She also appeared in the movies Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot and Mannequin.
The cast of the Golden Girls reunited in 2004 to promote the DVD release of the series, however, Getty was too ill to attend.

Whenever I am in a bad mood she make me feel good. I always used her world like "PICTURE THIS IN SICILI" TV will never be the same without her. She should have be the one to go to the middle east & sort them out. They wouldn"t have known when they will all be eating in one plate.Chris Igiewe LONDON

She made me laugh everytime I watched the programme. Best wishes to her family and friends.
