Bore de Jour

Billie Piper

You can't have picked up a newspaper or magazine or walked past a bus shelter in the last two weeks without seeing a scantily-clad Billie Piper smiling knowingly back to promote her latest ITV2 drama Secret Diary of Call Girl (ITV2 10pm). If you believed the hype this was groundbreaking stuff, akin to Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives with a few more whips and corsets thrown in. Sex and money...sounded promising.

My first surprise was that the show was only 30 minutes long. Surely the biggest drama in ITV2 history was worth an hour long special? How could we possibly get to know and love the characters in 24 minutes? As it happened, that was the least of my problems with it.

Stick a girl in some saucy underwear and you can get away with anything, or at least that's what it felt like to me. No real storyline, obvious dialogue and almost cringeworthy sex scenes aplenty. It felt wrong watching Billie pretend to enjoy it. "No Billie, go back to time travel and stop this nonsense!" Billie looked great all the way through, but she was Billie, not Belle. I didn't believe her and I can't imagine how this can sustain anyones interest (other than possibly a 14 year old boy) for the entire 8 week run.

The worst thing is that we all wanted to love it, but in this case, unlike the real Belle du Jour, (marketing) money can't buy my love...

So, did the earth move for you?
