Hollyoaks Triumphant at Soap Awards

Hollyoaks' Emma Rigby

Hollyoaks was the surprise big winner at the British Soap Awards after scooping six prizes at last night's bash.

The Channel 4 soap picked up top acting honours for stars Chris Fountain and Emma Rigby and was also awarded Best Exit, Most Spectacular Scene, Best On-Screen Partnership and Sexiest Female.

Coronation Street was a close second after picking up five awards including Sexiest Male for Rob James Collier and Best Comedy Performance for Maggie Jones, who plays the brilliant Blanche.

However, it was EastEnders that took the top award after being named Best Soap - the show's other three awards included Best Storyline for the Max and Stacey affair.

Emmerdale had to make do with just a couple of awards including Best Single Episode for baby Daniel's death.

But the biggest cheer of the night was for Corrie legend Liz Dawn who picked up a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ill health forced Liz to quit the soap in January after playing Vera for 34 years.

What do you think of the award winners? Did Hollyoaks deserve to pick up the most trophies? Was EastEnders really the best soap of the past year? What about poor Doctors that walked away empty-handed?

Let us know what you think...

Didn't surprise me that Eastenders won best award, however I can't help thinking that if Coronation Street had been entered in this, that would have won giving Corrie a massive 6 awards and leaving Eastenders with just 3. But without Corrie being nominated we'll never know. I think that storyline with Max and Stacey has to be one of the wost storylines in soap history. What were the voters thinking? Eastenders is dreadful, awful storylines and terrible characters. Coronation Street all the way!!!

It must be a fiddle, if Hollyoaks won!! Unless the kids who watch it all voted. No one over 18 could possibly watch that soap. Personally, I would rather sit and watch paint dry. Also, Channel 4 is known for !!!! phone line curruption. Remember BB and Richard and Judy. Anyway thanks for letting us know beforehand who won. Now I do not have to watch the awards and be disappointed.

I love Doctors and storyline about nic west being in the wheelchair after the car crash was fantastic. the acting was fantastic as it is throughout the series, however due to the fact that they are a daytime soap they have a lack of audience and therefore a lack of votes. I do think however that the panel that vote on the awards should take more note! Even the lady who is on THis morning that talks about the soaps each week admitted to never watching Doctors before and she was on the voting panel for the awards. I do find this a tad unfair. Dont give up Doctors, you a re very much derserving of these awards and you should recognised for your brilliant acting and fantastic storylines. Emma Galos Cricklade

Well done Hollyoaks! definitely the best soap on tv and they deserved every one of their awards - I just can't understand how Eastenders managed to get the best soap award again when Hollyoaks is far superior. [am I the only person who's noticed that other soaps copy their storylines too?!]
