The only surprise here is that it doesnt happen more often. It isnt really the fault of the shows, but it is inevitable that the auditions will attract some fairly desperate folk looking for a long-awaited break, some of whom will have psychiatric illness, and some of whom will just try anything, including all-out manipulation to try and gain an audition, without the insight to realise that this soirt of behaviour will only put everybody off even more. It is an ineivtable consequence of living in a society that appears to value celebrity more than it does actual talent, and the naive belief of many that if you want something badly enough, it is bound to happen for you. Truth is, if you're not good enough, it probably won't. And that applies to pretty much any career you may choose to mention.
