The adventures of loveably mischievous schoolboy Just William are to return to television, it has been announced.

The BBC has commissioned a new series of the show, which had a successful run in the 1970s when it starred the very young Bonnie Langford as Violet Elizabeth Bott.

Just William, due to air on Sunday afternoons next year, is set in 1952 and features the scruffy schoolboy William Brown getting into various scrapes.

Martin Jarvis, much-loved for his work reading the stories for audiobooks, will act as a consultant on the new series.

Children's BBC has also commissioned a behind-the-scenes look at the new natural history programme Life, aimed at younger viewers, called Inside Life.
